It's a wonder there are any pre-Civil-War quilts left.
Here's one well-worn survivor from the years before 1840. It has a lot of
wear in the middle (the reason it's in my home for orphan quilts.)
Had somebody followed the advice below....

And cut out the middle strip, making a narrower quilt, it
would have warmed a hospitalized soldier (a noble death for a quilt)
but then again...

In the depression era, ladies did that with old sheets. When the middle was worn, the sheet was cut in half and the edges seamed. I inherited a couple sheets from my mother-in-law that were seamed down the middle and the edges hemmed.
As expensive as cotton sheets are today I will remember that recycling tip.
