Sets for Hands All Around BOM

A Sawtooth Star Sampler for 2021

Next week (just in time for Tony's birthday) we are starting our 2021 pieced BOM  Hands All Around: Alcotts At War with the first sawtooth star variation in the series. You may want to be thinking about how you are going to set the stars and how much fabric you need. You'll find patterns for 8", 12" & 16" blocks each month.

Rough estimate of yardage for a 60" quilt top of 12" blocks if you are using a basic two-shade color scheme:
3 yards of the lighter color
2 yards of the darker

But most of us will be using scraps---reproductions or up-to-date prints.

In this post you'll find ideas and patterns for more complicated sets.

Denniele is making her Hands All Around sampler
alternating the stars with 13 curved blocks---Transcendental Circles.
She's doing it in two sizes in two color schemes.

Her red, white & blue sketch.
She'll keep us posted on her progress at her LouannaMaryQuiltDesign
Facebook page.

Scroll down to see a pattern for the alternate blocks in 8" and 12" versions. I couldn't figure out how to get the 16" pattern on a single sheet of paper. EQ8 or BlockBase (#2683) will print it for you if you want to work that large.

Any of the alternating block sets with 12 sampler stars and 13 setting squares
will give you the following finished quilt sizes without borders:
8” Blocks = 40”
12” Blocks = 60”
16” Blocks = 80”

Lucky Star Set

You might alternate the 12 sampler stars with 13 smaller stars.

Western Star Set

Or set the blocks on point
12 Sampler Stars + 6 smaller stars
8" =  34" x 45"
12" = 51" x 68"
16" = 68" x 90-1/2"
Pattern for edge triangles later.

Cutting the Smaller Stars

A. Cut 4 small squares for each block (x 13)
8” - 1-1/2”
12” 2”
16” - 2-1/2”

B. Cut 4 squares. Cut into 2 triangles with 1 diagonal cut. You need 8.
8” - 1-7/8”
12” - 2-3/8”
16” - 5-1/4”

C. Cut 1 square. Cut into 4 triangles with 2 diagonal cuts. You need 4.
8” - 3-1/4”
12” - 7-1/4”
16” - 5-1/4”

D. Cut 1 square
8” - 2-1/2”
12” 3-1/2”
16” - 4-1/2

E. Cut 2 rectangles
8” - 2-1/2” x 8-1/2"
12” 3-1/2” x 12-1/2"
16” - 4-1/2 x 16-1/2"

F. Cut 2 rectangles
8” - 2-1/2” x 4-1/2"
12” 3-1/2” x 6-1/2"
16” - 4-1/2 x 8-1/2"

Periwinkle Set

Another option: Alternate with applique blocks.
Two years ago we did an applique Block of the Month Hospital Sketches, inspired by Louisa's wartime work. The first block, a wreath of periwinkles, was for her:

You can fit that pattern tightly into squares cut 16-1/2" or shrink it for the 12" blocks.

Can't wait to get started. I thought I had a setting idea (red crosses in the alternate blocks) but your "apple slump" has me thinking now.....
