2014 Civil War Block of the Month: Threads of Memory

We are going to do another free online Block of the Month on this blog on the theme of the Civil War for the year 2104.

The theme Threads of Memory refers to the Underground Railroad. Each month you'll get a block named
for an important place in the story of the network that assisted slaves on the road to freedom. We'll explore true stories of people who lived in slavery, escaped on the "Liberty Line" or helped the fugitives.

The twelve blocks will finish to 12" and each is an original pieced design for a star block.
(No applique!)

YOU DON'T SIGN UP. I'll post the block instructions here. But you might want to sign up on the left here
for email notifications. The weekly post will come right to your inbox.

I'll post blocks and stories on the LAST Saturday of each month beginning on January 25, 2014.
UPDATE: Here's the first post
http://civilwarquilts.blogspot.com/2014/01/threads-of-memory-1-portsmouth-star-for.html

Jean Stanclift made the blocks for this sampler several years ago. We'll be showing hers in primary colors.

She used
reds, yellows and blues
with a very dark brown as a background.
Her sashing was two shades of blue.

To update the sampler Becky Brown has done two new sets of blocks---One in rather romantic prints of pink and brown and the other in my 2014 reproduction collection Ladies Album for Moda.

Here are some fabrics from her pink and brown set done and
in her signature style with lots of fussy cutting.

Here are the swatches from Ladies Album
which is scheduled for March, 2014 delivery.

Dustin is also doing two sets of blocks as models.

He's mixing my 2013 collection Civil War Jubilee
with a plain white for contrast.

He is going to make a set out
of ONE FABRIC.

Blue & white ticking.
Stay Tuned!

Jean's sampler of 12 blocks with sashing finishes to 68" by 88". We'll give you that basic set and some yardage suggestions in January.

Right now it's time to start sorting your fabrics.

  15. PinkD---as a fabric manufacturer I think you should buy new fabric. As a fan of the found object I think you should go to the thrift store and find more old needlework. What to do, what to do?

And for those who ask about signing up I posted this above in red:
YOU DON'T SIGN UP. I'll post the block instructions here. But you might want to sign up on the left here for email notifications. The weekly post will come right to your inbox.

  23. I've never done a BOM and have been waiting for one to catch my eye - this is perfect and I can't wait to start it, thanks so much. I'm just a bit worried about fabric as I can't afford new - would second-hand men's shirting material and plaids be ok on a plain background?

  24. Re: Second hand shirtings. See reply to PinkDeenster above. Second hand shirtings will be terrific. You'll get some ideas for stripes from Dustin's ticking blocks.

  25. This is going to be my first BOM, and I am thrilled! Have your Civil War book and am so inspired by it. Just needing something to get me going on making blocks. Someone else commented that there is NO APPLIQUE, and that sealed the deal for me. :) Can't wait to purchase some of your new fabrics!

  35. I am a fairly new quilter and a Civil War re-enactor. You can guess that most of my stash is CW reproduction fabric. I am looking forward to beginning this new challenge. I have been a student of the Civil War and the Underground RR since high school and I won't say how many decades that has covered. My question - are the blocks authentic to the times?

    ReplyDelete
  36. Just found this BOM and I am in. The funny thing is I just found an old kit of yours that has been hiding in my sewing room. I have been cutting and have started sewing it.It is called 1862 Battle Hymn. I am not sure what year it is from but I love the fabrics.

  37. Barbara - I have found if I submerse myself in books showing antique quilts ... even just looking at the photos ... before I select fabric for an antique-look quilt, the better group for fabrics I choose. This goes for sure picking pieces from my own stash.

Like the mind walks back into time - well sort of! Love the fabrics, quilts and patterns you are sharing. THANK YOU

    Smiles, JulieinTN

  39. I am reading Tracy Chevalier's book about a young quaker quilter who is part of the underground railroad and I will be very happy to make a quilt myself to commemorate those courageous people. I love Civil war fabrics. Thanks for such a good idea

  43. Love Barbara's work. will there be a PDF for each BOM?

  44. I have made the first block, and I LOVE this pattern. Went together quickly. I had only one problem....picking fabric colors...to many choices! Loved it.
