Four squares cut 2" x 2" become 1-1/2" x 1-1/2" finished squares in your 4 x 4 checkerboard. Four 1-1/2" finished squares produce a 6" block.<br /><br />(Four squares cut 2-1/2" yield an 8" finished block.
