It depicts the control and the cruelty of the man's captor and is a startling and affecting image. When I was in school, we were told to go to the courthouse and observe a trial. When I did, they brought out defendants shuffling to walk in cuffs linked with heavy chains, on legs and hands. The men were were very young, and it's an image I'll never forget.
